Sphelele Beautifull

Early Life

Sphelele Mzimela was born in the early 90's on a Friday morning Empangeni hospital in the KZN province. She is daughter of Thembelihle Nzuza and Zenzele Mzimela a very successful chattered account and business. She has two younger sisters Xabiso and Snothile Mzimela.  Sphelele is a name that was given to her by her late grandmother which means last born regardless of the fact that she was the first born of her fathers children. Her grandmother had given her the name Sphelele because she considered her first grandchild as her own, therefore she was the last born of her Five daughters. Sphelele was raised by her grandmother in a small township called Enyoni, she re-calls the years spent with her grandmother as the best years of her life and a very happy child hood, sadly her grandmother has since passed on (2008).

Sphelele went to Stanger manor primary school, an indian school. Later she had to change schools and went to Spearman primary school in Durban Sydenham, which was a coloured school, she remembers often being teased by her coloured classmates for her indian accent when she spoke English. This was clearly amusing to them. Her love for music had begun way earlier but it is only when she started living in Durban that she had really exercised her song writing skills, every day she would gather her friends and make them sing and compose melodies.

She went to New Horizon college, a private boarding school in Harrismith Freestate, she re-calls how much she cried the first time she arrived there, being so far away from her whole family was a scary thought, for the first few months she often cried wanting to go home but her grandmother and dad made her stay there, they said she was better off, they were right. Sphelele learnt how to be independent and became more artistic, sphelele and her group of friends won the school talent show with their dancing the year she arrived, she went on to create and choreograph a string of other dance shows at school, formed musical singing groups and sang at church Sunday mornings.

She enrolled at The Durban University of technology in 2009 where she studied poetry, radio drama ,music, dance and Acting. The same year she began going to studio to record her music. During her second year she majored only in music, dance and acting, started acting in a string of theatre productions while at the same time perfecting her contemporary dancing skills working with popular Durban choreographers such as Musa hlatswayo and Mdu Mtshali. During her 3rd year she directed the very provocative play by Eve Ensler ‘The Vagina Monologues”, one of the best and most successful theatre productions she has directed to date. .Sphelele hold a diploma in drama for The Durban University of technology and a degree in motion picture from The South African school of motion picture medium and live perfornance ( AFDA Academy), she currently potraits Busisiwe Langa/ Kentucky on the mzansi magic soapie Isibaya.
